If they feel bad they will switch off.  You know what I am talking about. 

Now there are several ways to manage a person’s state. SEVERAL!  You keep your audience involved.  You don’t talk at them all the time.  You let them participate. 

Now one of my favourite ways to keep my audience fully engaged is to elicit state through story telling.

I mean, that makes me really excited when I can do that.  When I can really just make sure my audience are feeling great, it makes me so excited! 

Actually, when I know I’m doing a great job of that I get excited.  Have you ever had a time like that where you were so excited that you felt like you could own the entire world? 

Think of that time.  I had butterflies in my stomach and this big old grin on my face… what did YOU look like?  Have you ever done that?

You see, states are contagious.  If you’re on a platform and you get in an intense emotional state, and tell a story from that state, about that state… and then you hook them in by asking have you ever had a time like that.  (Repeat after me… have you ever had a time like that?   HAVE YOU EVER HAD A TIME LIKE THAT?)  Then you can elicit that excited state in them, too.   

You see the key to giving a powerful presentation is to be the rollercoaster driver.  Your audience will have ups and downs, and that’s OK… you just need to know that you are the one managing those ups and downs… and the way to do that is by managing their STATE!

Now I don’t know about you--but something that really bugs me… and I mean bugs me… is when you go see a presenter or trainer and they have this incredible message. But you’re so distracted with the way they’re always playing with their nose, or they’re doing the little dance. You know the one I mean. 

So one of the things we’re going to help you do is get rid of it ALL… ALL your distracting mannerisms, so the only thing people remember is what a great speaker you were with such an inspiring message. Would that be OK?

Once we’ve got rid of ALL your distracting mannerisms, we’ll layer in some of the best psychologically based gestures that will--again… help YOU to elicit unconscious emotional responses in the audience. 

An example of these are the Satir categories.  They are 5 archetypical gestures that, based on the archetypical meaning of the gesture, will elicit certain responses in the audience.
